Priest. Let us be attentive. Pease be with you all.

Reader: And with your spirit. The Prokimen in tone 7. The Lord shall strength to His people / The Lord shall bless His people with peace!

Verse: Offer to the Lord, O ye sons of God! Offer young rams to the Lord!

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading from the first letter of Apostle Paul to the Corinthians. Priest: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brothers, now I plead with you, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephans. Besides, I do nor know whether I baptized any other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

Priest: Peace be with you reader.

Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. It is good to give thanks unto the Lord, to sing praises to Thy Name, O Most - High!

Verse: To declare Thy mercy in the morning, and Thy truth by night!

REMEMBER ME

Ion Golgotha stood three crosses. On the middle one hung the Son of Man, with a malefactor on each side. Most people knew quite well that they were crucifying an innocent man in Jesus. What they did not know was that they were crucifying God. Only one person seemed to have known it with no shadow of doubt, and that was one of the despised thieves. His name is not recorded, but his last words are and have come down to us in Holy Scripture to be used in the Holy Liturgy. We repeat them as we go up individually to receive Holy Communion: “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42)

In the whole terrible tragedy of the Crucifixion we may pass this incident by, ignoring the tremendous importance to us as an example of penitence and impenitence. We know nothing about either of the malefactors. We are only told how they died. Evidently neither was a follower of Christ. One was a bitter man who in his last hours had only harsh words for a fellow sufferer, siding with the merciless crowd. The other had a flash of comprehending light; he knew himself to be hanging next to the suffering God, the Lord of Life who accepted death for his sake. At that moment, he believed that Jesus Christ is God and entrusted himself to Him, acknowledged sinner that he was. He had not asked to enter the kingdom, only to be remembered. The Lord reassured him, “Verily I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” These words were never spoken to any other living soul. Thus, as St. John Chrysostom wrote, he sprang right off the cross into Paradise. It is never too late to repent. God grants us time, to our very last breath. Yet, for us Orthodox Christians, it can never be too early to repent, for we know not what tomorrow will bring.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem has a long passage in his catechetical Lectures:

“Concerning the robbers who were crucified with Him, it is written… Both of them were before this transgressors, but one was so much longer. For the one was a transgressor to the end, stubborn against salvation; who though his hands were fastened, smote with blasphemy by his tongue.. But the other rebuked the reviler, and it was to him the end of life and the beginning of restoration; the surrender of his soul, a first share in salvation. O Light Eternal, which gives light to them that are in darkness! Adam by the Tree fell away; thou by the Tree art brought into Paradise. The faithful Abraham had not yet entered, but the robber enters! Moses and the Prophets had not yet entered, and the robber enters though a breaker of the law. The robber has a will to work righteousness, but death prevents him; I wait not exclusively for the work, but faith also. I am come who feed My sheep among the lilies. I am come to feed them in the gardens.”

St. Cyril sees the robber as a fellow traveler with Christ in agony. Christ is always our fellow-traveler in our joy and in our pain. The Son of God suffered unto death not that we may be exempt from suffering but that our suffering might be like His.

The repented thief fully admitted that his crimes deserved punishment. How often are we ready to acknowledge our faults great or small without trying to justify them? To accept forgiveness is not easy because it implies the recognition of our faults.
