Priest: Let us be attentive! Peace be with you all! Reader: And with your spirit! Priest: Wisdom! Reader: The Prokimen in tone 5. Thou, O Lord, shall protect us / and preserve us from this generation for ever!

Verse: Save me, O Lord, for there is no longer any that is godly.

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading from the letter of Apostle Paul to the Hebrews.

Priest: Let us be attentive

Reader: Brothers, see with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand! As many as desire to make a good showing in the flesh, these would compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For not even those who are circumcised keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may have boast in your flesh. But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord.

Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Verse: I will sing of Thy mercies, O Lord, for ever; with my mouth I will proclaim Thy truth from generation to generation.

Verse: For Thou has said: “Mercy will be established for ever, and My truth will be prepared in the heavens.”

WHAT IS ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY?

STEALERS OF TIME: “Time is of the essence,” “time is money,” we exclaim in worried tones as we hurry and scurry, to achieve what? Fatigue, discontent, a longing for something unachieved, or maybe for something which in our haste we have altogether lost? Is not that something, the very thing we are so keep to make use of, the very sense of time itself we lack? We feel its absence; leisure is an amenity we now hardly ever enjoy. We have provided ourselves with every labor-saving device laziness could contrive, yet ease evades us: like a whirlwind time rushes by, or so it seems to us. But is it not we who are rushing past, grabbing here, snatching there, as we race along, far outdistancing time in our scramble? Time is neither slower nor faster than it ever was; season follow season; sun and moon keep their appointed time. (Psalm 104) the earth revolves at the same rate it has since the beginning. What are we doing to ourselves and to the world in what we live?

An unnamed mystic wrote in the fourteenth century, “ As a token of the preciousness of time, it is good to think of the manner in which God gives it to man. He never gives two times at once, but one after another… This is the time you must give account of, and you will have no excuse against God saying, ’Thou gavest two times at once and I had one stirring at once’” Could it be that that is what is wrong with us; have we perchance become stealers of time? Are we overusing it rather than wasting it? God, when He created, set a limit to activity and instituted rest. It was one of the signs of freedom given to Israel to remember when they escape from the toils of Egypt. In resting man imitates God, who rested on the seventh day. When he rests from his activities, man not only proves that he is free, but also that he is the son of God. Where in the Holy Scriptures are we ever called upon to hurry - if such a word appears at all in the Bible? Are we not rather called upon to “be still and know that I am God”? Our Lord invites us to come apart into a desert place and rest awhile (Mk. 6:31)

Rest is one of the greatest gifts given to us by God. Rest does not simply mean total cessation from work or activity, but on the contrary, it frees our energies to celebrate the joys of creation to “delight” ourselves in the Lord. True repose is a spiritual activity, one in which we bring forth our true image of God. It is in walking in the ways of God that we find rest in our souls (Jeremiah 6:16) One of the most terrible punishments we are threatened with is that God will not let us enter into His rest for we have erred in our hearts (Psalm 95:10-11) “Therefore,” says Saint Apostle, “while the promise of entering His rest remains, let us fear lest any of you be judged to have failed to reach it” (Hebrew 4:1) It is in quietness and in taking our time that we learn to pray. “I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches” (Psalm 63:6) Haste is never advocated in the Bible except as an escape from danger, but exertion alternates with repose throughout the Scriptures. Rest is not a standstill, but the fulfillment of activity, a plentitude which here on earth becomes a foretaste of heaven.

Stop therefore, O my soul; take heed; quiet down your haste and listen; listen for the still small voice of God, which is not in the earthquake, nor in the fire (I Kings 19:11-12), but in the quiet of your own heart.

Pray for the sick: The Lord said: “Do unto others as you would want them do unto you.” So if we will be sick, we will ask help from God, we will ask priests and people to pray for us. In order for the Lord to listen to us when we are sick, we need to pray for those who are sick. O Lord our God, Who by Your Word alone healed all diseases; Who cured the Mother-in-law of Apostle Peter; Who chastises with pity and heals according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every malady and infirmity: Do You the same Lord, now relieve Your servants: Archbishop Vsevolod, Fr. Michael Michalopolos, John Sr. Tylko, Helen Rucky, Pam Scannell, Paul Chebiniak, Jon Ward, Evelyn Kanazawich, Robert Kocak, Audrey and Eugene Klym, Michael Hovancik, Kevin Terpak, Emilia Lewkowicz, Mildred Charnetsky, Mary & Walter Gulachok, Mary Gormish, Olga Gooley, Mary Ford, Mary Mihalko, Margaret Klish, Marlyn Klish, Cypryan Klish II, Sophia Malowicky, Genevieve Sadowitz, Michael Sr. Duby, Anne and Karen Girnis, Julie Sadowitz, Catherine Dobransky, Pelahia Kit, Stephania Moroz, Mildred Bogdan, Wasyl Krawecki, Meghan Scannell, Olga Drost, Marion Kaspryk, Nicholas Corba.

and cure them of the sicknesses which grieves them; lift them up from their beds of pain, sending down upon them Your mercy; and if it be Your will, give to them health and a complete recovery. For You are the Physician of our souls and bodies, and to You we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen
