Priest: Let us be attentive! Peace be with you all!

Reader: And with your spirit! Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The Prokimen in tone 1. Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us / as we have set our hope on Thee.

Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye Righteous! Praise befit’s the just!

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading from the second letter of Apostle Paul to the Corinthians

Priest: Let us be attentive

Reader: Brothers, but this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, he has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.

Priest: Peace be with you reader.

Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Verse: God gives vengeance unto me, and subdues people under me!

Verse: He magnifies the salvation of the king, and deals mercifully with Christ, with David and with His seed for ever.

WHAT IS ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY?

Orthodox spirituality begins with the desert, with the monastic movement which became an identifiable elements in Christianity during the fourth century, though it was a continuation of something which had been found from the very first, in Saint John the Baptist.

The monastic movement began in the Egyptian desert. It was in some ways a response to a Christianity which had become the religion of the empire. Christian life, had once been a commitment to a way of life that contradicted the assumption of the world it inhabited, and could lead its adherents to persecution and death. Now Christianity became the religion of citizens of the empire, who were in no danger of persecution and could even view the church as a means of social and political advancement. The monks reacted against this complacent betrayal of the Christian spirit.

Those who fled to the desert to encounter God went into a region which had traditionally been associated with death and the demonic, but also with the struggle and victory over both. The people of Israel had wandered in the desert, a place far from the promised land; Jesus went into the desert to pray, and confronted Satan there; and John the Baptist, who lived in the desert, proclaimed the coming of God’s kingdom. If death and demons were to be found in the desert, this is where victory over them would be manifested, and where the heart of the struggle with the demonic would occur. John the Baptist was taken as a kind of “protomonk.” His ascetic life, with its prophetic insistence on repentance and the presence of God’s kingdom, served as a model for the first monks. A life in which every energy is concentrated on being attentive to the Living God was considered an angelic vocation (and this is why some icons portray Saint John the Baptist as an ascetic dressed in animal skins, with angelic wings).

The earliest monks tried to put into practice the exhortation of St. Paul who called upon Christians to “pray without ceasing.” But what did prayer mean, and how did one start? The essence of the spirituality of the desert is that it was not taught but caught; it was a whole way of life. It was not an esoteric doctrine or a predetermined plan of ascetic practice… It is important to understand this, because there is really no way of talking about the way of prayer, or the spiritual teaching of the Desert Fathers and Mothers. They did not have a systematic way; they had the hard work and experience of a lifetime of striving and to re-direct every aspect of body, mind, and soul to God, and that is what they talked about. That, also, is what they meant by prayer: prayer was not an activity undertaken for a few hours each day; it was continually turned towards God. /Will be continued in next Sunday’s Bulletin/

In order for the Lord to listen to us when we are sick, we need to pray for those who are sick. O Lord our God, Who by Your Word alone healed all diseases; Who cured the Mother-in-law of Apostle Peter; Who chastises with pity and heals according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every malady and infirmity: Do You the same Lord, now relieve Your servants: Fr.
