Reader: And with your spirit!
Priest: Wisdom!
Reader: The Prokimen on tone 3. Sing praises to our God, sing praises! / Sing praise to our King, sing praise!
Verse: Clap your hands, all ye people! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
Priest: Wisdom!
Reader: The reading from the letter of Apostle Paul to the Romans.
Priest: Let us be attentive
Reader: Brethren, having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having became slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Priest: Peace be with you reader.
Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
Verse: In Thee, O Lord, have I placed my hope; let me not be put to shame!
Verse: Be Thou a God of protection for me, a house of refuge, in order to save me!

Today in addition to the names of the saints to be commemorated on this day, we find an icon and a prayer to the Mother of God is commemorated. They are the icon and prayer “Dostoyno Yest” or “It is truly meet.” What a fascinating story! I will never recite the prayer without bringing it to mind.
It was Saturday evening and a young novice monk was chanting the responses at services in the small chapel when an unknown man began to chant with him. When he started singing the Archangel Gabriel interrupted him and said: “Where I’m from we honor the Mother of God by singing: “It is right, in truth, to glorify Thee, the Birth -Giver of God, the Ever-Blessed, and All-undefiled, and the mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim. You, Who without defilement did bare God the Word, true Birth-Giver of God, we magnify Thee.” As he sang the unfamiliar hymn, the Archangel Gabriel stood before an icon of the Mother of God. It was later given the name to the icon of the Mother of God: “It is meet”
Following the service, the young monk asked the Archangel to write the words down for him so that he could remember them. He gave the Archangel Gabriel a marble slab. The Archangel obliged him. He took the marble slab and began engraving the words on it with his fingers as the marble seemed to become soft as wax and the words became deeply embedded in it. As the Archangel Gabriel handed the marble slab back to the monk, he disappeared. After this, the icon and the marble slab were taken to the main church of the monastery for veneration and the prayer became one of the most popular ones.

Last Thursday and Friday, our iconographer Vladislav Andrejev worked with his son Nikita on finishing up on some details on the icons. Also, they covered the icons with linseed oil for the second time. The first time they used a spray and this time they applied it by hand. The icons are finished and they are very uplifting. Thanks to God, the iconographer and all of you for having this divine gift.

Here is a brief history of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Johnson City, NY written by John Sr. Tylko for the Preservation Association of the Sothern Tier. They are planning for a Gold Dome Tour of the Triple Cities and our Church is included in the tour. The association has asked us to write a brief history of our Church.
During the very early twentieth century, immigrants from the very western region of Ukraine, Lemko’s in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, emigrated to the Southern Tier of NY and Northern Pennsylvania Region. They came to work in the hard coal mines, in the cigar factories and some took up farming which was their ancestor vocation. In time they came to Binghamton-Johnson City area to work in the shoe industry. They came to seek new opportunities to escape from a peasant life of work and servitude.
A handful of these early Ukrainian immigrants with a sincere desire to worship in the Orthodox Christian faith of their ancestors convened in 1926 to establish “St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church”. In the beginning, Church services were held in a former blacksmith shop building on Maple Avenue (now Harry L. Drive) in Johnson City.
In 1926, efforts were made to build a Church. Some parishioners had to mortgage their properties to raise funding, and eventually the first Church was completed in 1930 on Virginia Avenue in Johnson City, NY.
During the early 1940’s as many as 136 parishioners answered the call to serve their country during the Second World War. During the later 1940’s a second wave of immigrants arrived in the Southern Tier.
As a tribute to their service and to thank God that all veterans returned home safely, the parishioners built “St. John Memorial Center” in 1953 east of Virginia Avenue. This became the catalyst to earn savings through the hard work and dedicated service of church members and relatives who catered functions such as weddings, receptions and meetings (240 catered events in 1957, with all dishes were washed by hand) to fund the construction of the present Church which is located at 1 St. John’s Parkway off Virginia Avenue in Johnson City, NY.
The Building.
The Church is of modern Byzantine design, and was built in 1969. The main floor, which is of cruciform shape, contains a narthex, nave and sanctuary with priest’s and altar boy’s vestries. A choir loft occupies the second floor. The transepts and intersecting cables support a small dome and onion shaped spire which are directly above the main floor area where church sacraments are performed.
The Church design was inspired by the artistic talents and concepts of Pani Julia Lawryk, the wife of the Very Reverend (later Protopresbyter) Franko Lawryk, who served in the parish for over forty years.
The nave of the Church features eight stained glass icon windows which were designed by Yaroslav Baransky, a Ukrainian immigrant with studios in New York City. The larger windows in the transept area depict “Resurrection” and “Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The nave of the church is separated from the sanctuary by the iconostas of ornate carved design, work of Matthew’ Wood-Products Company in Luzerne, PA. The iconostas was inspired by Pani Lawryk who also applied all the gold leafing. The icons on the iconostas are the work of Michael Myrosh in 1942; Fr. Joseph Zelechivsky was the pastor at St. John‘s at the time. All icons on the iconostasis were removed from the first church.
The main façade of the church depicts “The Baptism of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by Saint John the Baptist in the Jordan River” The mosaic is of ceramic and glass, fabricated in Italy, and is also the artistic endeavor of Mr. Baransky. The main icon surround, front facing, window surrounds and stair towers are of Indiana Limestone. The remainder of the exterior is done in Belden brick. The star towers are topped by wooden octagonal onion shaped spires covered with copper and gold leafing.
The iconography within the sanctuary area was completed in 2007 by Iconographer Vladislav Andrejev, a world renowne iconographer who maintains an art studio in Whitney Point, NY.
The basement area of the church, which was completed by church parishioners, contains religious classrooms, church board room, museum (established in the year 2003) and church library.
The main structure of the church and choir loft are framed in structural steel utilizing rigid frames. The main floor and basement are of reinforced concrete design. The church was designed by John Tylko, a professional engineer and member of the church council.

People and Population: Although, according to the latest edition of the UN Population Division’s Word Population Prospects, the population of the economically developed nations will remain about 1.2 billion in 2050 - a number that would decline sharply but for the estimated immigration from other countries of 2.3 million people a year - the median age will rise sharply. Now 38.9 years in Europe (the highest of any part of the world) and 36.3 in North America (the second highest) the figures are expected to rise to 47.3 and 41.5 by 2050 In comparison Africa’s is now 19 and expected to rise only to 28
* As population age, “beneficial ratio” of workers to those who depend upon them decreases. According to World Population Prospect, it “will begin declining after 2010 in Europe, North America, and Oceania, after 2015 in Asia and after 2025 in Latin America.” By 2050, 1.4 people will be working to support every dependent in Europe, and 1.6 in North America. One scholar estimated that Europe would need 10 million immigrants a year to maintain the current ratio.
*Sects in the world: Offering what some other sect Buddhists believe is a “prosperity dharma,” a sect Buddhist version of the “prosperity gospel” preached by some Christians, the Soka Gakkai sect has grown since its introduction to the United States in the 1960s to 100,000 members, most converts, and a reputation as the most diverse of the Buddhist sect groups in America, with 15% of its members being black. The sect, whose Japanese name means “Value Creation Society,” summarizes the Buddha’s teachings as “devotion to the mystical law of cause and effect” and members-who chant this phrase twice a day - often dismiss the Buddhist teaching that desire leads to suffering. Scholars estimate that there are 2.5 to 3 million Buddhists in the United States, with 800,00 of them converts.
* The percentage of people who answered “No” when asked if they would like to have a Muslim as a neighbor ranged from 6.5 in Canada to 20.9 in Greece and just under 20 in Belgium, Norway, and Finland, according to a study titled Love Thy Neighbor by economist from the universities of Ulster and Queensland, who surveyed people in 19 European countries, Canada, the United States, Australia, and new Zealand. The average for these countries was 14,5 with the United States at 10.9
Marriage and the Family: Inner-city virgins get better grates and want to pursue more education than their sexually experienced peers, who not only get worse grades but are more likely to drop out of school and to smoke, drink, and use other illegal drugs. The study, conducted by pediatricians at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in new York City, noted that virgins were much more likely to come from intact two - parent families.

Pray for the sick. The Lord said: “Do unto others as you would want them do unto you.” So if we will be sick, we will ask help from God, we will ask priests and people to pray for us. In order for the Lord to listen to us when we are sick, we need to pray for those who are sick. O Lord our God, Who by Your Word alone healed all diseases; Who cured the Mother-in-law of Apostle Peter of fever; Who chastises with pity and heals according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every malady and infirmity: Do You the same Lord, now relieve Your servants: Fr. Michael Michalopolos, Audrey and Eugene Klym, Valerie Melnychenko, Kevin Terpak, Emilia Lewkowicz, Mildred Charnetsky, Mary & Walter Gulachok, Mary Gormish, Olga Gooley, Mary Ford, Mary Mihalko, Margaret Klish, Marlyn Klish, Cypryan Klish II , Sophia Malowicky, Genevieve Sadowitz, Michael Sr. Duby, Anne and Karen Girnis, Paul Laszko, Julie Sadowitz, Catherine Dobransky, Pelahia Kit, Charles Stasko, Stephania Moroz, Mildred Bogdan, Wasyl Krawecki, Meghan Scannell, Olga Drost, Marion Kaspryk, Nicholas Corba, and cure them of the sicknesses which grieves them; lift them up from their beds of pain, sending down upon them Your mercy; and if it be Your will, give to them health and a complete recovery. For You are the Physician of our souls and bodies, and to You we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, Amen.
