Holy icons in our faith and life. In this bulletin we continue describing about the icon of Saint Basil the Great located on the left side, standing next to the Virgin Mary Theotokos. St. Basil did a great work in defending Orthodoxy. Going from city to city, St. Basil explained the teaching of the Church against the heretics, and invoked a strict discipline among the clergy, holding them responsible for order in the Church. When hunger threatened the region, he convinced the rich to share their wealth with the poor, and sold his own property, as well, and shared it with the poor and hungry, whether they were pagan, Hebrew or Christians. He then revised his rules for the monasteries, wrote by-lows for the churches, and finally wrote Divine Liturgy.
Later St. Basil became a bishop of Caesarea. Emperor Valentinus sided with the heretics and even sent his own educated professor Modestus to argue and try to prevail upon St. Basil to accept the teaching that Christ was not “of one essence with the Father” but that He was “seemingly of one essence.” Modestus could not influence St. Basil preach in the cathedral. The enemies of St. Basil were not satisfied, so they persuaded the Emperor to banish St. Basil from Caesarea. It was so ordered but on the same day the Emperor’s son became seriously ill. This was taken to be an omen and punishment for the banishment of St. Basil, so the order was rescinded. St. Basil then went to the palace where he prayed and the child got well.
St. Basil died from complete exhaustion at the early age of 49 years on the first day of January in the year 379 A.D. There is a tradition that on the day before St. Basil’s death a well-known Hebrew doctor was called to diagnose his case. The doctor told everyone present to prepare for a funeral because St. Basil would not live until the following morning. But St. Basil asked the doctor, “If I will live longer, will you accept Christianity and believe that Christ was the Son of God?” The doctor agreed and gave his solemn promise feeling certain that St. Basil could not possibly live that long. Much to the doctor’s surprise, he found St. Basil alive and improved the following morning The doctor confessed and said, “Now I believe that your God is the True God and I am ready to fulfill my promise.” St. Basil replied, “ I myself will baptize you.” The doctor cautioned, “You must not get up, Bishop Basil,” but St. Basil insisted and answered, “God will give me strength to rise and do what I have said.” With these words, he got up, baptize the doctor, served Divine Liturgy and gave the doctor Holy Communion. Then he went home and thanked God for all His mercies and peacefully passed to eternal life.
/Will continue in the next Sunday’s Bulletin/

In order for the Lord to listen to us when we are sick, we need to pray for those who are sick. O Lord our God, Who by Your Word alone healed all diseases; Who cured the Mother-in-law of Apostle Peter of fever; Who chastises with pity and heals according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every malady and infirmity: Do You the same Lord, now relieve Your servants: Fr. For You are the Physician of our souls and bodies, and to You we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, Amen.
