Priest: Let us be attentive! Peace be with you all! Reader: And with your spirit! Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The Prokimen on tone 1. Let Thy mercy, O Lord be upon us / as we have set our hope on Thee.

Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, o ye Righteous! Praise befit’s the just!

Priest: Wisdom! Reader: The reading from the second letter of Apostle Paul to Corinthians. Priest: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brethren, this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace around toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” Now may he who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.

Priest: Peace be with you reader. Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Verse: God gives vengeance unto me, and subdues people under me! Verse: He magnifies the salvation of the king, and deals mercifully with Christ, with David and his seed for ever.

Thursday, October 6/19 Holy Orthodox Church will commemorate Holy Apostle Thomas. Thomas was a poor fisherman. When he heard Christ, he followed Him and became one of the Twelve Apostles. By not believing that Jesus had risen, Thomas showed the Church that Jesus was not a ghost manifested to them, but that His earthly body actually appeared to them. After Pentecost, Thomas’s lot fell to go to India. He was dismayed, but Jesus appeared and told him not to be afraid. King Gudafor of India sent his merchant to find an architect to build him a palace. Jesus appeared to the merchant and sold him His slave Thomas for three pounds of silver and wrote him a bill of sale. King Gudafor marveled at Thomas’s drawings and gave him much gold, promising to return in three years to live in the palace. Instead, Thomas gave the gold to the poor and spent two years teaching, converting, and performing miracles. The king had Thomas imprisoned when he learned of the deception, but Thomas told him that he had built him a mansion in heaven. When Gudafor’s brother died a few days latter, he saw Gudafor’s mansion and was permitted to come back to life to purchase his brother’s mansion in heaven with his own wealth. Soon, Thomas baptized the two brothers.

When Mother of God was about to die, all the Apostles were caught up by clouds and angels and taken to her. Thomas saw her in the clouds and she gave him her belt. When Thomas arrived at her tombs, he asked to see her body. When it was found missing, Thomas taught the Church that she had ascended into heaven bodily.

In the land of Kalamida, Thomas converted and baptized the king’s son and wife as well as others. Thomas was pierced by five spears at the hands of the king’s soldiers and gave up his spirit. Later, when one of the king’s sons became possessed, the king sought to dig up Thomas for a healing relic. Instead Thomas appeared to him and told the king that he forgave him and to touch only a little soil from his grave and his son would be healed, and it happened in this way.

Saturday, October 8/21 Venerable Pelahia. Pelahia was a harlot from Antioch Syria in the third century. She was famous, beautiful, and wealthy. At that time, a group of bishops were gathered in the city to discuss a certain issue. When Pelahia rode by in her carriage, Saint Nonnos, one of the bishops, gazed at her intently and condemned himself for not caring for his soul the way she cared for her appearance. St. Nonnos had a vision that during the Liturgy a foul-smelling dove honored about him. When he left there, he dipped his hand where they baptized the catechumens and the dove became suddenly clean. The next day, Nonnos spoke to the congregation on the immortality of the soul, and by the will of God, Pelahia was there. It caused compunction in her and she cried bitterly. She sent a note to him saying that she wanted to confess her sins to him, that she had heard that Jesus came to call sinners to repentance. Not wanting to see her alone, he ordered that she confess also before the other bishops in church. She was baptized and communed, her godmother being the nun Romana. The devil appeared in their midst in the form of a man and accused Nonnos of taking away his powers, and accused Pelahia of being a traitor. She made the sign of the cross and he vanished. The devil tempted her again at night, and again she sealed him with the sign of the cross. She asked Nonnos to distribute all of her ill-gotten gains to the widows, prphans, and the poor. The next day she dressed in a hair shirt and an old garment and secretly went to live on the Mount of Olives. By revelation, bishop Nonnos knew of her whereabouts and sent his deacon to see her. When she opened the door, she asked only that Nonnos entreat God on behalf of her sins and she closed the door. Within a short while, Pelahia died in 457 A.D.
