This is for your own salvation, for the remission of sins and life everlasting. Please do not wait till the last minute, it could be too late. We never know when God will call us. Today we are here tomorrow we will go into eternity, and will stand before God’s judgment.

Priest: Let us be attentive! Peace be with you all!

Reader: And with your spirit!

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The Prokimen on tone 7. The Lord shall strength to His people / The Lord shall bless His people with peace!

Verse: Offer to the Lord, o ye sons of God! Offer young rams to the Lord.

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading from the second letter of Apostle Paul to Corinthians. Priest: Let us be attentive.

Reader: Brethren, we then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fasting; by purity, by knowledge, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Priest: Peace be with you reader.

Reader: And with your spirit. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Verse: It is good to give thanks unto the Lord, to sing praises to Thy Name, O Most-High!

Verse: To declare Thy mercy in the morning, and Thy truth by night!

Friday, October 6: The Conception of the Honorable, Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John. Zacharias the priest was in the temple during the feast of the Tabernacle when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him, saying that God had heard Zacharias’ prayers and that Elizabeth his wife would bear him a son, to be called John. Zacharias did not believe because Elizabeth was barren and because they both were elderly. But Zacharias knew of other barren women of Israel who had conceived, including Hannah the mother of the Prophet Samuel and Abraham’s wife Sarah. Because of his unbelief, Archangel Gabriel condemned Zacharias to be speechless until John was born. John was conceived fifteen month before the birth of Christ.

Can a sinner, in the space of ten days, make full repentance of his sins?

By the immeasurable grace of God, he can. There was a well-known bandit. Both in the countryside and in the capital itself, he inspired fear and trembling. Then the Emperor himself sent him a cross, as a pledge that he would not punish him if he gave himself up.

The bandit took the cross, and did indeed give himself up. Arriving in the city, he fell at the Emperor’s feet and begged his forgiveness. The Emperor kept his word, had mercy on him and led him go free.

Immediately after that, the bandit fell gravely ill and sensed that death was near. He began to repent bitterly of all his sins, and implored God with tears to forgive him as the Emperor had. He shed many tears in his prayer, so that the handkerchief with which he wiped them became soaked, and he died after ten days of prayerful weeping.

The night of his death, the doctor who had been attending him had a strange vision in a dream: When the bandit on the bed breathed his last, a number of little black men gathered around him, flourishing bits of paper on which his sins were written, and two glorious angels also appeared. A pair of scales were placed in the middle, and the little black men gleefully put all the bits of paper on it, so their side of the scales was loaded, while the other was empty.

“What can we put in?” the angels asked each other. “Let’s look for something good in his life.” Then there appeared in the hand of one of the angels the handkerchief soaked with tears of repentance. The angels quickly placed it on their side of the scaled, and it at once outweighed the other with all its papers.

Then the little black men fled, howling in anguish, but the angels took the men’s soul and carried it to Paradise, glorifying God’s love for mankind.

Repentance: “If you fall rise, and you shall be saved.” You are a sinner, you continually fall, learn also how to rise; be careful to acquire this wisdom. This is what the wisdom consists of: learning and praising the Psalm (50) “Have mercy upon me O God, after Thy great goodness…” inspired by the Holy Spirit to the king and prophet, David, and say it with sincere faith and trust, with a contrite and humble heart… the most important thing in life is to be zealous for mutual love, and not to judge anyone. Everybody shall answer for himself to God, and you must look inward to yourself. /St. John of Kronstadt/
