Priest: Let us be attentive! Pease be with you all! Reader: And with your spirit.

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The Prokimen in tone 1: Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us/as we have set our hope on Thee! (Psalm 33:22)

Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, o ye Righteous! Praise befits the just! (Psalm 33:1)

Priest: Wisdom!

Reader: The reading from the second letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians: Priest: Let us be attentive!

Reader: But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purpose in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor, His righteousness endures forever.” Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving us to God.

Alleluia: God gives vengeance unto me, and subdues people under me!

Verse: He magnifies the salvation of the king, and deals mercifully with Christ, with David and his seed for ever! (Ps.18:51)

FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN FAITH

The methods of Praying

Bearing in mind that prayer with God is the most important activity in life, we must devote time to it when we are at our fullest strength. We must not forget to pray to our Creator. Otherwise we will blind ourselves spiritually, for if prayer is not necessary, then neither is God. Blessed is he who believes that all visible things are from God, for such a person will not be shaken from the path of pleasing Him.

To what extent does the body participate in prayer?

Our Lord Jesus Christ, having Himself as perfect man, was spiritual to the highest degree. When the Savior prayed, he revealed the spiritual essence of his prayer, raising His eyes to heaven, bending the knee, or falling upon His face. (John 17:1; Luke 22:41; Matt. 26:39) Stand at prayer with bowed head and your weight equally distributed on both feet. Look up at the icon, and through the sacred face depicted thereon see the eyes of the Lord Himself trained upon you. Steady your heart, peacefully sealing upon it the sign of the cross in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pray without hurrying, and do not say a word without full attention. Do not worry about how to phrase yourself, for God does not need eloquence; let your prayer even be like the nonsense words of a little child, so long as it is a devout outpouring of the heart. We should not neglect prostrations, which signify our fall into sinfulness and rising through the grace of God. Ma! ke prostrations slowly, after crossing yourself. Prostrations warm the blood and facilitate mental work; but in order that the mind’s vivacity lead not to harm, it is necessary to turn it immediately to mental prayer in union with the heart. It is impossible to accomplish anything useful by wearing out the body but not taking care to uproot from the heart the passions. Do not let prayer please the lazy flesh - do not rush; for when the flesh is tired and worn out by this holy activity, it tries to finish as quickly as possible in order to return to fleshly, worldly affairs.

Polish Orthodox canonize Ukrainian Martyrs: Ukrainian martyrs from the Pidliashshia and Kholm areas (now in eastern Poland) were ceremonially canonized in Chelm, Poland on last June 2003. Metropolitan Sava of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church led the ceremonies. Representatives from most of the national Orthodox Churches of the world, about 100 clergy and several thousand faithful, from all over Poland and outside, took part. Among the martyrs were a monk, six priests, and the wife of one of the priests. They died for the Orthodox Faith from 1942 to 1945.

Orthodoxy in Poland, a significant part of which is made up of ethnic Ukrainians, was almost destroyed in the borderlands of Ukraine, Poland and Belarus. This happened as a consequence of the destruction of Orthodox Church buildings by the Polish government between the world wars, the events of WWII, and persecutions in early post-war Poland.
